Where is the old version. I’d like my pages to show under the pages sub menu as they did. Is that functionality gone? so far I don’t like what i see and am ready to remove the plugin. Please tell me I am just missing an easy setting and the simple functionality is not gone?

The functionality is gone, because it involved a hack to inject the tree view under the Pages menu item .

The plugin is scheduled to get 2 more updates to add more options to the page list. Here is part of this list:

    • Add caching for post types
    • Remove jQuery dependency
    • Remove jQueryUI dependency
    • Improve dragging and dropping to work inside child elements
    • Reconsider expand/collapse functionality in a better, non-intrusive way
    • Add a “Trash” link to the post type pop-up

If you want to get back to the old version – 2.7.7 – you can find it here – https://getbutterfly.com/wordpress-plugins/admin-menu-tree-page-view/

I also wrote a detailed analysis of this update here – https://getbutterfly.com/admin-menu-tree-page-view-2-8-refactoring-update/

It’s not possible to get the fly-out back, as it was done in a hacky way.

@butterflymedia thank you for explaining. One of my favorite plugin features. Just disappointed that’s all.

Yes – I agree – so useful under the Pages menu, and now it’s gone. Will probably remove now. But thanks so much for this plugin over the years.

You may have had your reasons, but the quick access to pages within the admin bar – *without* having to access another page – was, to me, the main point of using this plugin. I’ve used it in all WP installations for the last 10 years. Will be difficult to explain to clients that this functionality is gone. Hope you’ll reconsider. Managing page content in WP just became harder again, apparently. Thanks anyway.

I have 2 more updates to remove even more legacy jQuery code.

Bringing back the functionality would require getting hacky again. What features were you using, more specifically?

    • Accessing pages (editing, adding)
    • Re-ordering
    • Searching

Thanks for your reply! Actually, all of them, but mostly for quick access for editing without having to go to another page, and for reordering (which, alas, didn’t always work).

The standard WP system is horrible for managing content in sites with hierarchical structures and more then 10 pages, and the quick access to the tree, including basic management, in the main admin menu thus was immensely useful, and it also looked good.

I can’t speak to the DOM jitters you mention when changing it with AJAX, but functionality-wise it’s basically a “deal breaker”. Now I can’t really see a difference between “CMS tree page view” and “Admin tree page view”, except that the former doesn’t have a top level menu entry but gives access to the trees under the respective post type label, which I find more intuitive.

So, again, I’m sure you have good reasons, including code hygiene, to remove the apparently hacky functionality, but to me that hacky functionality was the real reason for using this plugin over others. Wihtout that, as mentioned, I find the post-type-based-treee-access approach of CMS Tree Page View more intuitive, so I’ll probably switch to using that plugin.

Whatever you decide, thanks for offering and supporting this plugin for so long!

The next version, coming later this week, will bring “Tree View” menu item under each public post type.

    Good to know, thanks!

oh no… I get you want clean code – but i also liked the “hacky” fly-out menu because it offered good UX functionality – I will look at the updates but I fear I will remove the plugin.

Because when the time-saving functionality is gone there is no use for it. And I also prefer clean WP installs with as less plugins as possible

Another update just landed – 2.8.1 – and it brings a custom “Tree View” menu to each public post type.

Thanks appreciate the effort but I want hackery back. 2.7.7! or bust. ??

Some user feedback for you @butterflymedia If i have to click a link to go view the page list I am going to just use the pages link. It was the convenience of going right to the page I want to edit.

@butterflymedia are you planning to allow a deprecate version? Because right now there is no point anymore to use this plugin rather than another admin tree plugin, the hover feature was the key point of your plugin.

If you want to get back to the old version –?2.7.7?– you can find it here –?https://getbutterfly.com/wordpress-plugins/admin-menu-tree-page-view/

I thought about adding it back, as an option, but it just won’t work with the future WordPress updates (6+) and future updates I have planned for the plugin.

Wanted to chime in and say I also preferred the hackery. ?? Don’t mess with perfection!

I’ll probably be removing the plugin as well, or reverting back to the old version. The new/current version isn’t convenient at all and I can’t justify keeping it.
