• My server is running PHP 7.1 and, when I run this theme on a WordPress site using the Firefox browser on a Windows 10 machine, I am not able to load page 4 of the blog posts using the Older Posts button.

When I press the Older Posts button it successfully loads page 2, then I press it again and it loads page 3, but when I press it a 3rd time to load page 4 then the theme becomes unstable and it doesn’t load page 4 of the posts and there seems to be no way to get any additional posts to load.

From an iPhone, from both the Safari and Chrome browsers, when I press the Older Posts button no older posts will load at all.

Is it possible I need to load some other plugins onto my site to get the Older Posts button to run correctly? And does anyone experience the same issue?

    Thanks…

  • Just tested the theme out on a local install and the older posts navigation is working just fine for me when navigating through the theme. If you open up the Firefox console ( https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console/Opening_the_Web_Console ) when on page 3 and try to navigate to 4, do you see anything popup that might explain the issue you are having?

Thank you Jarret. Unfortunately nothing came up at all on the Firefox console when I tried to navigate from page 3 to page 4.

I then tried typing page 4 as a URL to navigate to page 4 like this and it worked:

    mysite.com/page/4/

The only issue though is that if you do that it just shows page 4 and none of the previous pages above it. Also, there is no way someone would know to type that to go to page 4 since the button isn’t working. So unfortunately it isn’t a solution, but it shows that page 4 works, its just an issue with the button and some scripting for some reason.

And on an iPhone, from both the Safari and Chrome browsers, when you press the Older Posts button, no older posts will load at all. But if I can fix the problem with the older posts on the desktop browser, then perhaps the iPhone might start working too.

Have you tried disabling all plugins and then seeing if the issue persists? Or try switching to a different theme temporarily to ensure it isn’t something specific to your current WP install and not the theme itself?

Thank you Jarret. Turns out it was a setting in the Jetpack plugin I had made for enabling infinite scroll. The in Jetpack the infinite scroll setting options are:

Load more posts using the default theme behavior
Load more posts in page with a button
Load more posts as the reader scrolls down

I had the second option selected and it had created a button in the center of the page which loads older posts in an infinite scroll mannr. I then switched to “Load more posts using the default theme behavior”. I now no longer have the continuous loading of older posts on the same page. But my problems are gone with loading more pages of older posts on both on desktop browser and iPhone.

But now it is back to loading to the default theme setting which loads a new separate page each time you click on the older posts button instead of having any kind of infinite scroll. Is there any way to create infinite scroll on this theme?

I just looked at the theme demo though and the theme demo contains the infinite scroll button in the middle of the page the way my site did before I disabled it in Jetpack. The demo is here:

    https://www.andersnoren.se/themes/fukasawa/

I am wondering why when I disable infinite scroll in Jetpack why I don’t have the same infinite scroll button in the middle anymore. Mine is now an “older posts: button on the lower right and, once I am on the second page of older posts, a “newer posts” button appears on the left. So mine is now like the old style of blogs scrolling.

I am wondering how I can get the older posts button with infinite scrolling back (like it appears on the theme demo), but without the crashing that was being caused by Jetpack?

    Thanks again…

I see that the Fukasawa theme demo is using the same infinite scroll function from Jetpack that I was using. But why there are errors when I use it on my site is strange.

I also tried disabling all other plugins and just running Jetpack with infinite scroll enabled to see if there is a conflict with Jetpack and another plugin, but even with just Jetpack running, and no other plugins, the problems still occur.

So I am still not able to use the infinite scroll function unless I figure out why it isn’t working correctly.

I also contacted Jetpack Support on this issue to see if they might be able to help and, after looking into it already, they said they can’t do anything to resolve the problem. They said they feel the issue is on the theme developers side.

They also suggested: “…you may be better off selecting a theme that does have support and regular updates.”
