OMG What is the problem?? 2010??

    This is getting seriously annoying.

    What is the deal with this tewntyten theme? No matter what changes I make, updates undo it all. NOW, after this one earlier today, suddenly every damn post has a huge space at the end with bullets all the way down. The editor shows no space, no tags. Last statement is at the edge of the editor box.

    Is there some reason that these updates have to just incessantly screw with the theme?

    Is there a different theme similar to this particular one that’s easy enough to mod where WP can update whatever and doesn’t screw up the theme? I’ve about gotten fed up with wp at this point, this is ridiculous. What’s the point of having any content at all via WP if it’s so unstable? What’s going on?

    Knock it off already or direct me to the correct – layman’s version – of what I need to click, set, change, fix to make it stop happening.

    Why is it sooo hard to just produce a platform to go in, post a blog, hit publish and be done with it…or just add a theme and make little modifications without having to go back to college. I mean really. The only thing keeping me here is I’ve invested time in learning *some* of how this works that I don’t have it in me to find another platform and have to go through all that again trying to learn something.

    Is point n click really that beneath you? Not everyone is a coder. We shouldn’t all have to be to use this stuff. That doesn’t mean I’m opposed to learning. It means give me the option of it on my own time and not to prevent me from using this at all. It’s not just me. Review the forums, tons of us don’t know php, we’re NOT dorks (okay, we’re dorks, but not geeks)…does it have to be so exclusionary?
    Everything else online is basic drag and drop, point n click…and still allows a hands on learning in the process.

    Give it some thought please.

  • Well first of all you are using a BETA release. If you want stability I would suggest using version 2.9.2. When the public release version of 3.0 comes out you wont have to worry about updates overwriting your theme modifications.

    @cm3digital, you’re incorrect in that twentyten is the new default theme and this behavior is by design.

    Yeah, it does. When you update WordPress it updates the included theme. That used to be ‘Default’ and now it’s ‘TwentyTen’.

    Every time you ever update WordPress it will always overwrite the included theme(s). Every time you update the theme from it’s source, it will overwrite your changes. That’s why I suggested to you that you use Child Themes.

    I even went and updated your old post to warn you that would happen.

    Seriously.

    1) Make backups before you update.
    2) Make a child theme (or anything NOT named twentyten).
    3) The hair will grow back.

    Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t realize the default theme was included in public release updates.

    The default theme has always been included in public releases. The problem I think is that the old theme was called ‘default’ and this one is twentyten, so people assume it’ll get treated like ‘normal’ themes. It’s an education issue, alas.

    Yes, All the more reason to leverage the power of child themes.

    One problem is actually solved -the bullets showing up all the way down the page on the main page of the posts themselves…that isn’t WP3.0 OR 2010 theme…

    That was the sexybookmarks plugin. I noticed one of them was a hyperlink and clicked…it took me to Linkedin and it occurred to me the bookmarks weren’t showing up, but the link locations were.

    Not sure if it’s a SBM setting or if this plugin isn’t 3.0 compatible but will look at it.

    As for the themes being updated and overwritten every time wp is updated, I guess they have their reasons. I have decided to, for now, just copy paste the style sheet and footer back in as soon as I update the rest. It’s a pain but it’s easier than having to go learn Joomla or some other one at the moment.

    But, WP people…I got my eyes on you…yes sir…I’m watching. 8-/

    As for the themes being updated and overwritten every time wp is updated, I guess they have their reasons.

    This isn’t a secret. it’s called ‘Anything that’s a part of the default installation of WP will be overwritten when you upgrade.’ That’s why people shout ‘Don’t edit core!’ The default theme, for lack of a better explanation, is core. And there is an EASY FIX. Four steps.

    1) Make a new folder, call it ‘barmaid2010’ and put it in the themes folder.
    2) Copy your footer.php and style.css into that folder.
    3) Edit your style.css and change ‘Theme Name:’ to Barmaid’s 2010 and
    add this below the tags:
    Template: twentyten
    4) Go into WP and activate your child theme.

    Done. Never again will an upgrade touch your files.

    Hahah! I was just coming to ask about that, actually. Thanks for the heads up. I was about to ask if I just changed the theme folder name itself if that would suffice. I use it for another blog, and just changed it to add “gc” at the end of 2010 and none of the updates messed with it.

    barmaid: any theme files that you’ve made changes to and do not want overwritten should go into it’s respective child theme folder ??
