Omit optional field from email

Hi all,
Currently I have a form setup with some required and optional fields. All the input fields have their Default text set and the Placeholder checkbox is ticked.
This is fine for the required fields. However, for the optional fields, if they are not filled out by the user, the email message sent does not populate the corresponding mail tag with a blank space. Instead, the tag (e.g. [my-optional-field]) is left inside the email.
Is there anyway to set up CF7 so that fields not filled in will be set as blank, and their tags will be replaced accordingly in the email?
