On backorder

Hi there!

If you have allowed backorders, the product will automatically switch to -ve stock once the existing stock count is sold out. to avoid that from happening, you can disable backorders on a product-level: Product Edit Page > Product data > Inventory > Allow backorders? > Select – Do not allow

Is there a way to globally switch it off, for simple and variable products?

We have over 600 products which are currently listed as “on backorder” so manually going through each one will be such a nightmare. We are afraid that this is pushing our customers away.

There isn’t an option to globally disable back-orders. However, what do you think about exporting all your products, editing the backorder value via CSV, and then merging the updated CSV file?

You can do that using the built-in import/export feature.

While editing the CSV, you’d want to look for the column that says Backorders allowed? and change its value to 0.

Basically:

1. Export the products
2. Edit the exported CSV using your fav editor
3. Change the value of Backorders allowed? column to 0
4. Merge the edited CSV into your store

Of course, I’d strongly recommend reaching out to your web host and requesting them to ensure that there’s a latest, working backup on your store before making the above changes.

I still don’t understand why our “in stock” products keep changing to “on backorder” automatically. The manage stock inventory is disabled. I need to make sure that after making these changes the products wont change again to “on backorder”.

Am I understanding correctly that you have Stock management disabled under WP Admin > WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Inventory > Manage stock and you’re still seeing products on backorders?

That should not be happening. In those cases, unless you manually switch to On Backorder, you should not see the same behavior:

That is correct, assuming you don’t want to manually manage stock (as you confirmed that you don’t have stock management enabled on the store)

I’ve tried changing the backorders to 1 in the CSV export and then import it but it does not seem to work, it doesn’t even seem to update any of the products (the backorders still display when I do a second export! I’ve also tried using a different theme and disabling all plugins (except WooCommerce) and still the same thing seems to be happening. Is there anything else that might fix the issue? I’m really desperate.

Thank you for getting back to us with your findings. I can completely understand your situation here.

For further troubleshooting, please follow the steps below:

1. Reach out to your Web Host to ensure that you have the latest, working backup of your site
2. Update everything on the site, including WooCommerce
3. Check if you’re still seeing the same behavior upon exporting products into CSV and fixing them as per the instructions in previous response here, and then importing them again (merge).
4. If that still does not resolve the behavior for you, a complete conflict test may be necessary to narrow down the culprit.

The best way to determine this is to:

• Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
• Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
• Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

You can set up a staging site to test by getting in touch with your web host, or using a plugin. I followed all your steps above and it still did not fix the issue. For some strange reason the changes still do not reflect even after importing the updated In stock column from backorder to 1. I then tried changing the Backorders allowed column from 1 to 0 and that worked perfectly via the csv import. So it looks like the variations are not being updated.

I’m not sure what else I can do as this still seems to be a huge problem. Is there anything else that you could recommend, please?

Just to reconfirm that I’m understanding correctly, you’re seeing this behavior on a store with Storefront as the active theme, and no plugins except for WooCommerce activated, and everything is updated to the latest version?

If yes, can I have the System Status Report for that store, please?
