So all I have to do, if I am reading this correctly, is make a file called home.php in my template dir and it will be used as the home page and my page.php will be used for the other pages?

If you are making a template file called home.php – actually you don’t need any kind of plugin…

That’s what I am doing. How do create a link to what the home page would normally look like? (IE I have a home.php that overwrote what was being displayed as my home page, but I still want to be able to link to the old home page but don’t know what URL to link to)

If by “old home page” you mean the index.php of the theme… you can not. Every instance of usage of index.php is over-written by the home.php.
