One data base for two installations

I was wondering when I made a new installation could I load wordpress in a sub domain and use that same config file so both sites would use the same database.

The reason for this is to have a mobile theme in the data base but using a mobile theme with vertical menus.

I have tried a few mobile plugins like wptouch but just done get the desired results.
