• I have several wordpress blogs, and have relatively little trouble figuring out issues. Deactivating plugins, adjusting minor CSS issues (though I am far from a CSS guy) but today I changed by template in wordpress (a 2 column layout) and installed new themes (by uploading to the directory). When I activated any of the new themes, they move all of my right column widgets, etc down to the bottom of the first column. So I switched back to the first theme I was using, and now that one is doing the same thing!

I even tried going back to the default theme. When i do that it takes my second column and moves it all the way to the bottom of the second column (down next to the last post in the first column).

I am stuck. Can you please look at this: https://actorartistdesign.com/wordpress/

This is the original template I used and it *was* two columns up until I tried a different template and then switched back.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

    Jay

  • Start by correcting the validation errors. I wouldn’t be surprised if you forgot a closing tag somewhere.

I’m guessing that this is caused by your most recent post. Try this:
Change your first post to draft and then reload the site. If the sidenav is back up then you know that somehting funky is going on with your latest post.

If that doesn’t do anything, go in the settings and change reading > number of post, decrease by one and see if that post is the culprit and if not do it again, and so on.

I’ve seen this happen over and over again and it’s usually because of an error in the blog post or a extra div.

I owe both of you a BIG thank you.

First, pboosten, I didn’t realize I had 90 errors!!! I will definitely be looking into those and trying harder to stay within the validation standards.

Second, crondeau, as soon a I read your comment I realized that, yes, I posted a YouTube clip in my latest post. So I changed it to a draft, and boom! The blog went back to normal!!! It’s like a magic trick. (haha)

Anyway, thank you. Both of you inspired a thought of mine – what if there was a website with experts who offered advice with a ‘donate’ button. And those seeking advice could post a dollar amount indicating the value of the solution to their problem. Neither party is obligated to pay or be paid, it would be on the honor system (unfortunately!) but someone like you gave an answer to someone like me – I would then be inclined to donate a few bucks for the time and effort you saved!!

    Thanks again guys!! (and girls)

Here is my design company: https://www.greatyoungminds.com that I own and operate with my wife. If guys ever have any questions I can help with, outside of wordpress, please let me know!!

    Best,
    Jay
