• hi, not sure if this is a wordpress problem or a problem with lighttpd, but i suspect it’s wordpress, as lighttpd parses all the files in the root, and can at least read the index.php to redirect me to wp-login.php, but every time i try to access /wp-admin in the new setup, rather than giving me a login screen, asks me to download wp-login.php

    help!

    extra info:

2.8.4, home page shows the site contents, though it’s not loading the theme, but i’m not sure the theme not loading is related.

  • Hold on a sec, has WP been installed successfully?

What is the exact phrasing of the error you get when it asks you to

    “download wp-login.php “?

there’s no specific error from wp, the browser just opens a download window requesting that i save wp-login.php. honestly i’m not sure WP is okey dokey any more, though the home-page shows the articles, and mod_rewrite’s not yet installed (that’s why i was trying to log in, hoping to disable permalinks for now.

Well being prompted to download wp-login.php tells me that the page is being mishandleded by your browser.

Have you recently updated/installed the WP framework?

Has wordpress ever worked on this server?

Have you set read/write permissions on the server?

yes, i tried reinstalling the framework by following the upgrade process after this problem started, WP never worked on this particular server… though your permissions idea was helpful. i chmod a+x wp-login.php and was able to reach the login page, but now it’s not setting a cookie… <sigh> i tried chmod -R a+x * within the webroot… still no go.
