    Hi!

MLA is fantastic. Yet, just ran into an issue. Had to recreate a PDF for “Prospect Hill” (PH) trail map. Uploaded it, tagged it with “Trailmap” so my shortcode would find it, which it does. But the thumbnail for PH is not displaying.

So i look at another trail map whose thumbnail is showing and at PH in Acrobat Pro DC and see that “Fast Web View” (FWV) is not on for PH. Turns out that rotating a page in Acrobat turns off FWV. So i run Optimaize in Acrobat and now FWV is on, upload PH map again, tag it. Still no love.

I create these PDFs in InDesign CC. That has just recently been updated to version 15.01. All the other PDFs whose thumbnails that show are from at least the previous CC version if not earlier.

I’m guessing that it is something InDesign is doing in creating the PDF, or Acrobat Pro when i rotate the first page.

I searched and didn’t find where someone had only one thumbnail not showing; it’s either all or nothing.

Any thoughts? Anyone have similar issue?

    Peace,
    Dan

Thanks for the positive feedback and your report. Thanks as well for the link to your example page; very helpful.

I downloaded a copy of the 2019-12-24-GOS-Prospect-Hill.pdf document and then uploaded I to my test system. Of course, it worked fine and generated a thumbnail image without any errors. It looks like the problem involves some difference between your system and mine.

There have been a few earlier topics along similar lines:

PDF thumbnail generation fails with error message

    Thumbnails won’t load

Error thrown when generating WP thumb for PDF

Can you try this experiment and report your results?

    1. Navigate to the Media/Assistant admin submenu.
    2. Check the box to the left of the bad item.
    3. Pull down the Bulk Actions dropdown, select “Thumbnail” and click “Apply”.
Verify that the Type radio button is set to “WP”.
    4. Change the “Existing Items” dropdown to “Delete”
    5. Ignore the “-Thumbnail” value in the Suffix text box. It does not apply to WP thumbnails.
    6. Click “Generate Thumbnails”.
    7. Check the return message at the top of the screen and look for a thumbnail in the table.

It would also help if you could activate MLA logging, try the generation again and let me know what the logging shows. To turn on logging:

    1. Navigate to the Settings/Media Library Assistant Debug tab.
Enter “0x8” in the MLA Reporting text box. That activates MLA debug logging for the thumbnail generation logic.
    2. Click the “Save Changes” button to record the new setting.

Run your experiment with logging on, then go back and set the MLA Reporting value back to zero (“0”) to stop the logging.

Any additional information you can provide will be helpful. If the log is too big to post, contact me at my web site and I will give you instructions for sending the log file. Thanks!

    Hi David,

Thanks for you quick response. Sorry i didn’t search well enough to find those links you provided.

I am in a captive WP environment where i do not have admin ability. I will ask to get access to MLA plugin if they want me to do the debugging.

But what i see from reading the links is a thread to all of them regarding WP thumbnail generation which can be an issue. I see in my media library that the PDFs uploaded since September do not have thumbnails generated as they don’t have one in the media library UI. This is most likely a clue to the issue. I think they may have moved from WP 4.last-version to 5.2.x that we are on now, though i could be wrong on the timing so maybe something else in their environment.

I am forwarding the link of this thread to the support i have for our environment.

FYI, i use MLA in a few WP sites that i do have total control over and have created from scratch, well with lots of help from BeaverBuilder. This site also has BeaverBuilder as well.

When i find anything out, i will report back. Until then, hope you have a wonderful new year!

    Peace,
    Dan

Thanks for the update. I am happy to work with your support group to do what I can to investigate and resolve the problem. They can contact me at my web site with any additional information or questions. I will leave this topic unresolved for now.

Good luck with all of your sites in the coming year!

    Hi David,

The thumbnail images are now being created. But the issue is now that the new thumbnails are not true to the dimensions of the PDF. On the page in question, the new PDF shows larger top and bottom margins than are in the original PDF and same for when you download the PDF from our site. I have created a test page and if i upload the older PDFs that do not show the larger top and bottom margins, they then show the larger top and bottom margins after uploading. So something in that environment and making thumbnails for PDFs.

So don’t know why they don’t contact you directly as you offered, but the support person i’m working with said “Our Web Studio team has provided the debug log from forcing new thumbnails and uploading a new image. They have suggested that you pass this to your plugin developer. If there’s anything that he needs from us to test, please let us know.”

    Here is the debug log:

Thanks for the additional information and for including the error log. You wrote “The thumbnail images are now being created.” Is that true for new uploads or for MLA’s thumbnail generation feature?

Your log shows two operations. The first is an MLA thumbnail (re)generation for two files. The second looks like an upload of a third file, test-map.pdf. The upload operation looks like no thumbnail was generated – is that right?

I copied one of the documents (2016-11-12-GOS-Storer-Conservation-Trails-Rotated-TESTING-1.pdf) to my own system and uploaded it to WordPress. It shows slightly different size and dimension values from those in your log, but I do no see the “larger top and bottom margins” issue you reported. You wrote “and same for when you download the PDF from our site.” I’m not sure what means. As far as I know, the document you upload should be identical to the document you download.

Perhaps you could contact me through my web site and I can send you instructions for sending me a copy of your “older PDFs” for additional testing. Any additional details on what you mean by “larger top and bottom margins” would be helpful. Thanks!

It has been seven weeks since my last post in this topic. I hope you have resolved the final issues with the PDF thumbnails on your site.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any remaining problems or further questions regarding your PDF application.

    (@danielmelnechuk)

    Hi David,

Apologies for not responding sooner… way too overloaded. The vendor that runs the WordPress site, where i do NOT have any admin privs is not going to put anymore effort into making the margins look correct because it is a 3rd party plugin. They will install 3rd party plugins if maintained and have a large install base, which yours meets.

The downloaded PDF that has the top and bottom margins display larger than what is in the PDF, displays correct margins in any app on my computer (Preview or Acrobat), and is identical to the uploaded PDF. So the PDF is not the issue, just some aspect of the thumbnail. But alas they will not put any more effort to fix.

So at this point there is nothing more to do but hope some setting or next rev of WordPress will make things all happy.

Thanks for all your efforts. So this is closed for now, and while not really resolved, please do mark it resolved for now.

    Peace,
    Dan

Thanks for responding. If you can post a link to a post/page on your site with the bad margins I can investigate further. If the bad margins are set by the WordPress thumbnail generation logic you can try regenerating the thumbnails with the MLA feature and see if that helps.

I will leave this resolved but I’m happy to help further if it’s worth your time and effort.
