one product setting 2 same attributes stock quantity problem

I have a sample pack product. The customer can choose flavor #1, then strength #1, then flavor #2, then strength #2. I know how to set the flavors and strengths, but how in the heck do I get it to say out of stock if e.g., they pick a flavor/strength 1 and then if they pick a flavor/strength 2 but #2 flavor is out of stock on a certain strength how do you get it to say out of stock.
Right now I have two attributes flavor/strength #1 and flavor/strength #1 and each attribute has every flavor and strength in the “values” box.
Then in the variations for #1 i have all the combos listed and then selected #2 and put in all the combos, but when I selected a product #2 that was out of stock it did not say “this item is out of stock.
Is this possible?
