• I manage a wordpress network at a university and as of late, I am experiencing some very odd (and disastrous) behavior.

In short, when one of my sites is deactivated, the sites run just fine, and the server load is very minimal. When this site is activated, the server gets overloaded and begins taking AGES to respond to any requests.

What’s peculiar to me, is that when the site is deactivated (and I am logged in) I can browse the site with no problems. Everything is super quick. As soon as it’s activated and I load it in a browser, things get messy. The moment it’s deactivated, things are back to normal.

-I have a limited number of plugins, and I have tried deactivating one by one with no change in behavior.

-Switching themes makes no difference (even the standard WP 2012)

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

What are the specs on this site?

How many users, how many posts, comments etc?

What are the plugins? You’ve tried with them all off?

Basically we’ve got to zero in on what makes this one special ??

    It’s a relatively new network:

    -5 sites
    -6 users

    Active Plugins:

    -Akismet
    -Diamond MultiSite Widgets
    -Easy fancybox
    -Multiple Category Selection Widget
    -Options framework
    -Raw HTML
    -Simple image widget

    Inactive plugins:

    WP-DBmanager
    WP-Table Reloaded

    and the site in question:

    -7 posts
    -5 pages
    -1 category

and just to confirm, I just “network deactivated” ALL plugins, and the problem persists.

What’s different about that ONE site though?

nothing that’s obvious to me, aside from the theme it uses – but like I said the problem persists even when I switch themes on it!

    update

I went into that site and removed all occurrences of “simple image widget” from their sidebars. Like MAGIC, things seem to have started working properly. I am going to investigate further, and I’ll provide another update when I know exactly what’s going on.

Interesting…. Were you calling an image with a 404 perhaps? I once crashed my site by having a bad iframe that caused a nested loop — it was an ad that didn’t exist, and it created a 404 page, which created a 404 and on and on. Kind of funny really.
