Only show featured image in shared links. Remove from posts.

Hi all,
I’ve been searching and searching all day for a solution and also for pugins that will do this foe me. What I’d like is to add a featured image but I do not want it to show on my blog or in my posts. I am using a tumbler style theme and I only need thumbnails to be shown in links on facebook etc back to my blog. Is there a solution to this? Am I correct in saying this was previously possible by not clicking add into post? How come this option is not available anymore?
