• My store base is in California, my standard tax rates are set to California, my test customer billing and shipping address is in California. But when I check out, there’s no sales tax applied. The tax box just says “(includes $0.00 Tax estimated for the United States (US))”

What am I doing wrong? I just want the California tax rate to be applied to any shipping address in California.

  • Your standard rates table should have:
    line 1: US CA * * 7.25%
    line 2: * * * * 0%
    – no more lines
    – must be US not USA
    – no zips or cities, just *

If you still have a problem, please post a screenshot of your standard rates table.

Thanks for your reply. I did what you mentioned and it’s still not adding the California tax for a California customer.

Ok. I finally got something to appear for california taxes!

    Here’s my settings:

What I need to do now is have a different tax rate for Los Angeles county. I’ve been trying to do a range of zip codes such as 90001 – 93592 but it won’t accept the dash. So I tried 90001…93592 and 90001;93592 but that still didn’t work. What am I doing wrong?

The range indicator is definitely 3 dots, so: 90001...93592. Spaces are optional but they will be trimmed and removed after saving. US / CA / 90001…93592 worked for me so I don’t know what to suggest other than to focus on that.

If the priority is the same, the line with the zip range must come higher up than the general CA line. The search for a matching tax location starts at the top of the table and stops when a match is found, lower lines are not examined.

Please post a link to your site.

Thank you! I moved the LA County tax to the top and it worked!

This is driving me mad! I tried with a different state and it still added the LA County tax. What went wrong?

There might be some caching going on somewhere. If you have a cache plugin, deactivate it until everything is working. Ensure your host is not caching anything. Go to Dashboard > WooCommerce > Status > Tools and “Clear transients” x 2.

On your checkout page, there is no country selection and the state selector is a not a drop-down which it should be. Do you have some functions or a plugin which are affecting the checkout page? Try deactivating other code and plugins, and switch to the default theme Storefront for testing. When everything works, switch elements back in one-by-one and test. If an element is causing a conflict you may need to leave it deactivated or find an alternative.

I cleared the transients twice like you said and it actually worked for different states but I’m back to where I was again with Los Angeles. There’s no tax again. What is wrong?

Also the United States is the country listed on the address by default.

By x 2 I meant 2 transient buttons, not one button twice.

Did you try deactivating other plugins and switch to the default theme?

Have a look at Dashboard > WooCommerce > Status, then down the bottom of the page you’ll see a section called overrides. Does your theme provide template overrides? If so, this means we are looking at theme code, not WooCommerce code.

Your checkout does not have a state dropdown, only a text field. This makes me think that either you have a theme override template, or you have a plugin which is interfering with the checkout page.

I see that your theme does not seem to have been updated in the last 12 months. During this time, WooCommerce 3 has come out and many WooCommerce-compatible themes have been busy bringing out updates. The test is, deactivate other plugins, and switch to Storefront. If tax works with Storefront but not with your theme, then you know your theme needs updating.

OK. I’ve finally figured it out. Instead of checking the Cart page, I should have been checking the CHECKOUT page! That is where you see the tax.

One thing though, if I make the address change in My Account page, how come the changes don’t show on the Checkout page?

    1. You may be able to get tax to show on the cart page by setting default customer location to geolocate.

    2. Same here. Don’t know why. Maybe its browser auto-fill.
