• Resolved greenmod

    (@greenmod)

I haven’t used or changed anything on my WP Bluehosted pages for a few years, Now I would like to update to 4.0 and redo it.
The site is there but not the admin pages, just the left column.
I followed MacManX’s advice to Manually reset plugins – nothing happened when clicking plugin.
Then tried his next suggestion,”If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).”

I re-named the folder “twentyeleven” to be “twentyelevenX”
That just made the whole site unavailable. So I changed it back. To the public it’s now just like before.
The dashboard is still just with the big white area.

Earlier I called Bluehost for help and a recording said they were extra busy from people updating to 4.0. Could my problem be from having such an old version? I plan to mostly redo the site so I don’t care if it changes a lot during an update.
    Thank you for helping.

Well, of course nothing happened when you clicked Plugins, that’s why I said to try manually resetting your plugins, which if you follow the guide at the link, doesn’t involve doing anything in your Dashboard. ??

If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

So, sadly I am such a beginner and will now try what you are suggesting. This is over my head so I will now work on that using the guide at the link to manually reset the plugins. Thank you for this helpful link.

Using your help and the steps listed by Besiara my helper and I (her really) got it all fixed up and I am back in my site to work on it after not using it for a few years. Thanks to both of you for your help! My helper thought it was necessary to first update to WP 3.5.1 before it allowed 4.0 but maybe that isn’t true. Anyway we are good and thanks to both of you for your help and thanks for this forum and for everyone who makes WP possible.
