Only works with italics, not regular font variants

Using Avada theme. Want to use Roboto 100.
Avada has good typography controls, but is limited in terms of controlling font variants. I set Avada to use Roboto in the theme options. I can choose a size, but not a font variant like font weight. The default weight seems to be 500.
I used the Avada google font settings to import the variants by entering this:
@import url(https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Roboto:400,100,300&subset=latin,cyrillic-ext);
Google Easy fonts lets me choose choose 100 italic, and it works. If I choose 100, it displays the standard 500 weight font. It will display all the weight variants in their italic forms, but not in regular type.
