Optimization process hangs and refuses to stop

    I use WP-Optimize 3.2.3 on WordPress 6.0. Twice in the past two days, I’ve had an issue where I go to the Database tab to begin a database optimization and had the plugin freeze on the “loading data” message that appears before the optimization options load. When this has happened, the dashboard becomes largely unresponsive: I can traverse the dashboard pages to some extent, but as soon as I try to do anything that involves executing any kind of operation, it stops responding. Disabling the plugin doesn’t help — the original process keeps running or trying to run without ever resolving, consuming enormous amounts of resources on the shared server.

    On both occasions, I’ve had to contact my web host to have them reset the server processes to make this stop. However, I’m not sure why this is happening. I used WP-Optimize repeatedly earlier in the day on the same site, and last night, without any issue. I really need to figure out why this is happening so it doesn’t recur.

    For reference, I don’t use the caching or compression functions, which are all disabled. I only use the database optimization tools, and only activate them manually (I don’t have scheduled operations).

  • @ate-up-with-motor Have you performed a conflict test yet?

    Try deactivating all plugins except for WP-Optimize and see if it is resolved.

    If so, reactivate each plugin one at a time until you find the culprit. You can check for the issue between activating each plugin, so you can see which one is causing problems.

    It’s essentially impossible for me to do that:

    1. The issue I described does not happen consistently. I used the optimization feature at least a dozen times yesterday with no issue at all.
    2. When it does happen, I can’t take any meaningful additional troubleshooting steps until my web host kills all running processes and resets the server. (I generally can’t even access the Currently Installed Plugins page when the problem happens, and if I do, I can’t take any action there. Disabling plugins via FTP has no impact on the “runaway” process causing the issue; when this happened the second time, I disabled WP-Optimize, but this didn’t solve the issue.)

    So, if the issue doesn’t occur, enabling or disabling plugins reveals nothing. If the issue DOES occur, I can’t enable or disable additional plugins, and disabling WP-Optimize doesn’t make the issue stop, which isn’t very revealing.

    @ate-up-with-motor Could you send me a copy of your server’s PHP Error log?
    You can find this log through your web hosting control panel (typically cPanel). If you are unsure where to find the PHP Error log, you can ask your hosts to provide it.

    I can’t release the full error log data for privacy reasons. I looked at the logs for the periods of both errors and saw that the beginning of each error condition was marked by a series of errors like this:

    There was no other logged error that seemed to be specific to WP-Optimize.

    @ate-up-with-motor Could you please increase the max_input_time to 900 and max_execution_time to 900 and check if it helps to fix the issue?

    Yes, I believe this is essentially what my web host did to temporarily alleviate the problem, in addition to performing a server reset to cancel current processes.

    Well, it’s a short-term fix, because the shared hosting plan’s allotted resources are limited. What’s puzzling is that my site’s resource usage has not significantly changed in quite a while, and I’ve never had WP-Optimize glitch in this way. (Usually, if I run short of resources while running some intensive operation like optimization, the worst it’ll do is time out for a minute, whereas in these instances, the process kept running and had to be forcibly stopped by the host.) There was no indication in the PHP logs or server error logs of why it happened, and since the optimization function has been working fine otherwise, it doesn’t appear to be a plugin conflict. It’s mystifying.
