Option to hide the formatting menu?

  • The formatting menu that pops up whenever you select a block is very intrusive if you’re just trying to write text, because it obscures the last line of the previous paragraph. If you’re writing, that is exactly the context you need to see in order to write a smooth transition.

    This is the #1 reason why I find Gutenberg to be a very difficult environment for actually writing text. For layout, it’s great. But it’s extremely intrusive if I’m just trying to write or edit multiple paragraphs.

    It’s also a bit annoying because, for text blocks at least, almost all of these formatting options are also available as shortcut keys.

    Is there any way to prevent this formatting bar from appearing? Or could it be made to appear to the left of the block, without obscuring part of the previous block?
