OptiPNG & GIFSicle problem on Namecheap

Before you do that though, try this:

Delete everything in the wp-content/ewww/ folder, and reinstall the plugin.

Jan, I’ve been getting emails otherwise, just not for this thread (and a couple in the past few months). The link does indeed say ‘Unsubscribe…’ so I’m definitely subscribed to all posts for this plugin. Maybe it’s just gmail being weird, because when I went back to look at the email from your post, then I found the original one for this thread also.

Thanks for your message. I pasted in the info you requested below and steps I took:

-I deleted the contents of the folder
-I deactivated, then deleted the plug in from WP menu
-I re-installed the plug-in, and got success message: “Successfully installed the plugin EWWW Image Optimizer 1.6.3.”
-I activated the plug in
-I get the error: “EWWW Image Optimizer requires jpegtran, optipng or pngout, and gifsicle. You are missing: optipng, gifsicle. Please install via the Settings Page. If the one-click install links don’t work for you, try the Installation Instructions.”

-I then noticed the box “Use system paths” so i unchecked this & saved
-It then shows Status as OK. (However it did this yesterday when I re-installed, but then the status went back to ERROR after some time)
-I am now waiting to see if anything changes

‘Use system paths’ was definitely your problem. The debug log confirmed that it was looking only in system baths as your webhost suspected also. The purpose of that option is to specifically ignore the tools that are bundled with the plugin in case someone doesn’t want to allow executables in their web root. Those of us with shared hosting don’t really have much of a choice if our webhosts don’t have gifsicle and optipng installed, and I’ve yet to find a webhost that does.

So long as you don’t check that box, the plugin should work just fine on CentOS, as that is actually the OS I use for testing the binaries.

Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like the Status is still ok, it didn’t switch back to Missing this time. So I think it’s good. I’m surprised the webhost didn’t see that option before as they were looking at my settings.

Although, the images are now not getting optimized. Is there something more I need to do? I even tried to manually optimize a couple images and it said “no savings”. Almost every image has ‘no savings’ next to it. Yet in Google page speed, it keeps telling me I should loslessly compress images.

your savings can vary greatly depending on how it was edited or saved. If an image is saved properly, it is entirely possible to have No Savings. You need to look specifically at what images pagespeed is complaining about, optimize those, and then see what changes. One thing that usually gets people is their theme images, which is why 1.6 introduced the Theme Optimizer under the Appearance menu.

Also be aware that if you have a caching plugin or anything similar, you may not see the results right away of course.
