    Hi all,

We’ve recently had a new WordPress site installed with Woocommerce and one of the issues is that some order origins are showing “Unknown”, while others show “Direct” and “Organic: Google”

Could someone please help with this “Unknown” issue? Thank you in advance!

    Hello notresponding,

Thank you for contacting Woo support.

The “Unknown” order origin usually happens when WooCommerce is unable to determine the source of traffic for that particular order. It could be due to various factors such as browser privacy settings, payment gateway redirections, or lack of tracking parameters.

To troubleshoot further, do you notice any common patterns among the orders marked as “Unknown”? For example:
    – Are these orders coming through a specific payment method?
    – Do they come from certain customer addresses?

Also, could you please share a screenshot of the Orders page, highlighting some of the orders with this issue? Make sure to blur out any sensitive information for privacy.

    Looking forward to your response!

Hi Zubair, thanks for the fast response. You’ve asked a really good question about common patterns. We had not noticed that the majority of “Unknown” order origins occur when a customer pays a deposit rather than the full oder amount (that is the nature of our business – customers can pay once their service is completed). We also don’t really understand what “Direct” means??

I’m struggling to add a screenshot, however… any tips??

    Hey, @notresponding!

We had not noticed that the majority of “Unknown” order origins occur when a customer pays a deposit rather than the full oder amount (that is the nature of our business – customers can pay once their service is completed)

It seems the payment gateway you are using for the deposits might be affecting it then.

Can you please share with us which plugin you are using?

?We also don’t really understand what “Direct” means??

Direct means the customer went directly to your website, it did not click on your website’s URL from someplace else.

So they typed in your website’s URL on the browser.

You can find more about this in this guide.

I’m struggling to add a screenshot, however… any tips??

I recommend using https://snipboard.io. You can share the direct link to the image as a response to this topic.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Have a wonderful day!

Hi and thanks for the reply!

    • We’re using Deposits & Partial Payments for WooCommerce – Pro by Acowebs. We’ve contacted them for support, but if you have any experience with this issue or plugin it would be appreciated.
    • “Direct” attributions – Thank you, I understand that this would be when people type our addres directly to a browser, but I wonder if there might be an alternative scenario? It seems to us unlikely that so many people type our address without referral, as we are a very small business and quite unknown.

We use HubSpot to post socials, and provide a link on those posts – could “Direct” attributions possibly be resulting from HubSport shortlinks, or any other possiblity??

    Hello notresponding,

    Thank you for your reply.

We’re using Deposits & Partial Payments for WooCommerce – Pro by Acowebs. We’ve contacted them for support, but if you have any experience with this issue or plugin it would be appreciated.

Please note that we only handle WooCommerce-related queries on this forum.
It’s great that you’ve already contacted Acowebs support for assistance with the Deposits & Partial Payments for WooCommerce plugin.

“Direct” attributions – Thank you, I understand that this would be when people type our addres directly to a browser, but I wonder if there might be an alternative scenario? It seems to us unlikely that so many people type our address without referral, as we are a very small business and quite unknown.

Regarding the “Direct” attributions, you’re correct in understanding that this typically refers to visitors typing your address directly into the browser. However, it’s possible that links without proper tracking parameters, such as HubSpot short links, could also be categorized as “Direct” if the source data is missing.

I suggest clearing your WooCommerce transients by navigating to WooCommerce → Status → Tools and selecting the option to clear transients. This may help if there are any cached data issues related to your attributions.

Let me know if you need further assistance!

    Best regards.

Thank you! We’ve cleared the transients and it does look like a HubSpot shortlink tracking issue, which now hopefully is resolved.

    Grateful for all you help!

    Hi @notresponding,
