Order Numbers Changed when Order Status Changed

We’re using the Sequential Order Numbers plugin, which worked fine, until we changed the status of some orders from Processing to Complete. When we did that, the order numbers changed to the next numbers in the sequence, which confuses our process (and potentially our customers).
For example, one order was #1781. When we changed the status from Processing to Complete, the order number changed to #1803 (which was the next available number in the sequence).
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Do you know why it would be happening?
