    Hi,

I noticed that when the affilaite link is clicked in a web page, as the new page is opening to the merchant’s website, that in the browser my original affiliate link is visible for a few seconds and then changes to the thirsty masked link.

The original link lasts long enough in the browser for someone to write it down. Is this normal?
    Thanks, Sue

  • Hi Sue,

Thanks for the message. This is normal behaviour, ThirstyAffiliates create a redirect URL which sends the visitor via that link to your affiliate link.

Cloaking is a bit of a loaded term these days so I will say this: cloaking as in masking the end destination URL in the browser using javascript tricks is actually against the WordPress plugin rules (meaning we are not allowed to make a plugin that does that and host it on their repository) and it is also against the Google Webmaster Guidelines which we take pride in saying we follow.

Cloaking in the ThirstyAffiliates sense means hiding the destination URL behind a 301 redirect, which is allowed by both WordPress and Google and means that users clicking on the link aren’t shown the end destination url when they wave their mouse over the link on your website.

Hope that helps clear things up a bit!

    Cheers,
    Josh
