OT-password protecting directory by using c-panel

I wanted to password protect my wp blog by using c-panel. While this isn’t wordpress related, I thought maybe someone would know. Do you know if the file that asks you to enter in the user name and password is strictly something the host can access? I’m password protecting it to avoid spam (I’m getting around 100 spam comments a day) so I would like the popup window to give the user name and password so that other people could read it and just type in the info. Any ideas? Thanks.
