Others cant see my blog

  • I am very new to wordpress so forgive my possibly stupid question(s). Firstly, do I need to have apache running in order to modify the blog? and secondly I cant seem to view the blog from another computer. Whenever I type in the ip address it says that access is forbidden or asks for a password and username. When I enter the password in my wp-config file it still doesnt work. Any help will be appreciated.

    So I figured out that I should put it in the public directory, but having guessed at that before, when I put the wordpress files in there all I get is another directory, not the blog site. Any suggestions?

    You’ll need to provide us a little more detail before we can offer any substantive advice.

    Are you hosting this yourself (I assume so, from the question, but it never hurts to be sure)?
    What server operating system are you using?
    Do you have a link to the site so that we can verify the errors you may be recieving?

    Have you read the fine Installing WordPress documentation?

    Yes I am (attempting to) host the server myself. I am using MySQl 4.1 (if thats what you are asking, again I am beyond new to this stuff). The only possible link I could give you is my ip address, and Im really not sure if thats what you are looking for.

    If you are running XP Home, use this:
    https://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
    If you are running XP Pro, use that too but first stop IIS

    If you have another OS, let us know what it is ?

    If your server is not accessible by a domain name, then you’ll likely have some difficulty. You will need to ensure that the URI values at Options->General use your IP address, and not a hostname.

    You’ll also need to configure Apache correctly. That is beyond the scope of this forum, unfortunately. If you have specific questions, we can try to help; but I think you’ll get up-and-running faster if you search out a beginner’s guide to installing and configuring Apache plus MySQL plus PHP. “LAMP” is a good search term to use when looking for installation instructions.
