Out of Control Spam

  • Over the last three days I have seen a massive increase in spam. It’s being caught by Askimet, but still, 453 spam messages overnight is something I have never experienced. I usually go through my spam messages because a few real comments always seem to end up there. However, I can’t go through 23 pages of spam messages looking for 2 or 3 that may be legit. However, deleting real comments is not something I want to do either, as it annoys loyal readers.

    I would appreciate any comments on what I can do or what may have triggered this onslaught.

  • Your site was probably picked up in an automated spam commenting system.

    No. But the way that I go through them all quickly is just by looking to see if anyone posted a link or submitted a URL with their comment. If so, then I don’t even look at it.

    After awhile you will probably just start to trust Askimet and not even go through them anymore.

    I believe I found the answer. I changed my settings so that posts over over a certain age would automatically be closed. Once I did that, the spam decreased instantly.
