Override wildcard sub-domains on WP Multisite (MediaTemple DV)

Yep.

Put the subdomain on the banned blog name list under Site/Super Admin.

You may also have to have the hard reference to your subdomain above the wildcard subdomain in httpd.conf.

Yeah, it can be maddening, but it’s doable.

Well its been maddening alright. I still haven’t fully gotten it to work the way I expected using httpd.include or vhost configs. I just don’t get MediaTemple’s configs enough. I need a little help.

1. Movin to Sub-directory

This will give more and easier access to using physical subdomains the way I’m used to making installing Magento and any other OS software we decide to use for other stuff easier (is it ever easy??).

However the SEO implications are my major consideration for not wanting to do this and also your warnings around that it may make things more complicated.

I think I shd find around some .htacces wizardry (any pointers??) for pointing tech.233.com.gh to 233.com.gh/TECH to gain the same advantages of a subdomain install from SEO right?

3. Is blogs.dir applicable in the subdirectory case??
I did some custom code exploding the URL to get timthumb to work with subdomains (my theme dev did not optimize for WPMU so multisite broke his code).

I forgot to mention that I did get it ‘working’ by not using wildcards in my vhost.conf but specifying the exact domains WP shoudl control leaving all other domains controlled by normal DNS rules.

Yes fff.233.com.gh (or even misspelled tceh.233.com.gh imstead of tech.233.com.gh) will revert to my servers default site. I am lookin for some .htaccess rewrite rules and conditions which would send all non-existent domains to WP but those that exist to either WP or their own DocumentRoots for other OSS softeare to run those subdomains.

If that works, I’ll stick to sub-domains cos I have control over each and every sub-site that will be deployed. The wildcard I need is so non-existent subdomains redirect to the main page or an error page.

No change. It’s the same either way, it uses the blog_id. Format don’t matter.

It’s not an htaccess thing, it’s a server config. ?? Best bet is to have the WP install the default site, so non exisitant ones fall there, everything else goes where it needs to.

Yes. I figured that out and made the WP site the default so it handles misspelled and non-existent requests.

Still need to figure out how to do it right so the other sites I have on that server do not redirect to the WP site, sigh… One problem at a time.
