Overriding field labels in login screen

Is there any way, without re-writing the entire login handler and without using a gettext-filter, to replace the texts “Username or Email Address” and “Password” input field labels?

I’ve tried to find a filter hook for this, but come up blank.

It seems odd since there are quite a few actions/filters for the login form ??
