• Is it safe to do a manual install when previous install and updates have been automatic?

I receive a fatal memory error and have tried all the work-arounds so I think this is the last option to upgrade to 3.1.3.

Has anyone ever overwritten an auto-install with a manual install?

  • It is not unusual to do a manual install if difficulties arise related to an automatic update failure. There are some things to be very aware of however:

    1) Make sure you have a COMPLETE backup of all files and database before attempting.

    2) If you have customized ANY files, make sure you have working backups.

    3) It may be best (after a complete backup) to delete (but it’s optional) all of your wordpress files EXCEPT your /wp-content directory and your wp-config.php file, and then do a fresh install rather than overwriting all of the old files. I cannot stress enough, how important it is to make sure you have functioning backups prior to manually updating.

That being said, I do manual upgrades all the time with an ftp client.

    Thanks for the advice Clayton.

I did a manual install and it was a success.

    You’re welcome.
