` "p ` emoticon problem and custom emoticons

Users are surprised by an unintended emoticon popping up when they enter a phrase containing double quote marks and the letter P (upper or lowercase.) Is there a way I can change this so that the emoticon sticking out its tongue is typed by entering :p instead?

Our chat users have also asked me to add some custom emoticons. How do I do this?
