P2 turning extremely slow

Im using version 1.4.2 of the P2 theme and, closing to 300 users, the site gets slower and slower.
Ive found someone else with the same issue recently, and he points out it may be relative to the mentiondata. (source: https://www.cotellese.net/2012/12/27/p2-theme-kill-sites-with-many-users/)
Ive disabled mentiondata on js.php (with a //var mentionData) but i see no tangible improvement.anyone else having this problem, or an idea on how to approach it?
