Can WooCommerce Services plugin be configured to use the product’s shipping dimensions as the package size when purchasing a shipping label? Perhaps one “special” variable package size entry that pulls its dimensions from the products shipping area data?

We have products of many different sizes that, when purchased individually, are packaged to ship as far as the dimensions entered in the product data shipping section. Most times, the individual item package size figures to be less in shipping costs than a flat rate box large enough for the item.

When I use WooCommerce Services plugin to purchase a label, it appears that I have to select a pre-defined package in order to calculate a shipping rate. We think it would be inefficient to enter all the different sizes of each product item in WooCommerce’s Package section in order to purchase a label for one item.

The plugin we use to offer the customer live shipping rates (not WooCommerce Services!) can calculate the cost to ship by using the products dimensions if only one item is purchased.

    Again…
Can WooCommerce Services plugin be configured to use the product’s shipping dimensions as the package size when purchasing a shipping label? Perhaps one “special” variable package size entry that pulls its dimensions from the products shipping area data?

    Thank you…

    Hi @pawdl,

I just wanted to clarify one point as it sounds like there is some confusion. The USPS shipping method gets your products weight and dimensions to then see what box a single or multiple items fit in. You can add custom boxes or use the pre-defined ones from USPS. It takes the box the product(s) fit into and includes that in the rate USPS returns for your customers.

Even though you said you don’t want to do this, I think your best option is to try creating boxes for each of your individual products. The way the box packing would/should work is that you create a custom box and set the interior dimensions of the box to match the product it fits. That way if a customer just orders a single product X and you have a box setup for X it’ll use that very exact fitting box to get rates for.

    Thanks for the reply @ryanr14,

It may be helpful to note that I am not using the WooCommerce Services plugin that offers rate to customers. Although I thought I had mine setup prior to the date of cutoff. So, on a single item purchase, the plugin that we use to offer the customer a price is based on that items size.

Since we have hundereds of items (most yet to be uploaded) and not many of these items share the same package size, I am hoping the WooCommerce Services plugin, which is used to purchase a shipping label, could also assume that the package size of a single item package. It doesn’t seem efficient to always add a box size in WooCommerce Services every time we add a new item to our products. We already added it to the items shipping section.

    Hi @pawdl,

Although I thought I had mine setup prior to the date of cutoff.

Contact us via our ticket form about this, we can get your site taken care of to return access to live rates.

I am hoping the WooCommerce Services plugin, which is used to purchase a shipping label, could also assume that the package size of a single item package.

Could you explain this further? You want to create one box that every product can use, or maybe more along the lines of assuming every product is individually wrapped in an appropriate box and not use any defined box size? I think the second one might be possible, just maybe.

    Hi @ryanr14,

Thanks for the offer. I have already brought up the live shipping rates on an earlier ticket. It’s OK, we have already bought a different plugin for live shipping rates. I only mention it here in case there is some residual differences comparing the WooCommerce Services plugin that supplies live rates and the new one that does not.

Yes – The second one. Most, if not all, items are packaged to ship individually as is. Having WS plugin assume the items dimensions as the “package” when purchased individually would save much time when purchasing shipping labels.

Thanks for your patience. I didn’t explain this too well.

    Hi @pawdl,

Thanks for clarifying with me. So here is one way around adding boxes for each of your products. When you go to create the label and get to the Packages section select the Move button.

Then you’ll have the option to use the items original packaging.

I think that will do what you are after, right?

    Aw, dang! Thanks @ryanr14.

I missed that even though I had used the Move option earlier for a different reason.

Thanks again – Sorry to bother you.
