• I use a static front page setup, which means creating a page for the blog and one for the front/index page. I set them accordingly in Customizer. However, doing this means I cannot choose the template for the blog/index pages because there is no option available under Page Attributes > Template.

The sample page for what looks like a post feed page (or a blog page) uses the Masonry layout. However, since I cannot set the blog page to “Grid”, I cannot use this.

What the blog page could look like: https://satoristudio.net/bento/masonry-page-5-columns/
What it has to look like: https://satoristudio.net/bento/blog/

It seems to use that type of masonry layout for the blog page plus the static page setup, I have to create three pages:

    1. Index page
    2. Blog page (assigned in Customizer, but not actually linked to)
    3. Blog-alt page (the one I included in the menus, link to, etc.)

Numbers 1 and 2 cannot have the template set. While I can edit the content of #1, I cannot do this for #2.

Number 3 would be used as the “blog” page so I can use the masonry look.

Actually, I was wrong. That 3-page system didn’t work because I can’t get the masonry to work.

I’ll show everything using screen shots because the page isn’t live, I don’t want links going to it, and I’m still working on it so the settings/appearance may change.

    I’ve created two pages:
    – Blog – set as the default blog page in the static front page settings using Customizer
    – Blot Alternative – an alternative page I used to be able to use the grid layout

    Blog

Here is a screen shot of the settings I use: https://www.johnrothra.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Bento-BlogPage-Settings.png
Here is how the page looks: https://www.johnrothra.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Bento-BlogPage-Display.png

To make things simple I used the defaults for most of it. As you can see, I cannot change the template because that option isn’t available.

Unlike the default one above, I can change the template plus I can add content. I added the post loop using SiteOrigin’s plugin. However, despite saying to use the masonry grid, it does not display that. I used the defaults for the masonry and Post Loop widget.

In the end, I see at least two problems:
    – Page displays not working properly
    – Limited/no functionality for setting page designs when using static front page

    Hey John,

as far as I understand, you’d like to have a static front page and a separate blog posts page with a grid layout. If that is the case, you can try the following setup:

    – Create two pages (“Pages – Add New”), one for the static front page and one for the blog posts page.

    – Assign a grid layout to the second page created in the previous step.

    – Go to the “Settings – Reading” admin section and choose “Static front page” in the “Front page displays” option. Choose the first page you created in step 1 as the front page and leave the “Posts page” drop-down blank (use “-Select-” if present). Save the settings.

    – Use the second page you created in step 1 as the blog posts page by linking to it from your primary menu.

    Sincerely,
    Andrii / Satori Studio
