It appears to be something your theme does. Multi-page posts on my site do not exhibit such behavior with auto-excerpts (Twenty Twenty-one theme). You might try adding an explicit manual excerpt. May or may not help, depending on how your theme is doing this.

Another option is to hide the undesirable elements with CSS (use the Additional CSS customizer panel).

The last option is to create a child theme and customize the responsible template so it doesn’t output post pagination links.

Hi. All my excerpts are both auto and explicit. I have an auto-excerpt plugin and I insert chosen text into the excerpt field in each post.

However, the problem has been resolved by surprise. I found a plugin, no longer supporter, that works fine nonetheless in my WordPress Version 5.7.2. The plugin is WP Link Pages Extended. It did a great job of styling the nextpage codes I had inserted manually, and the pagination disappeared from the excerpts.

I wouldn’t want to do a child theme now with the several hundred pages and posts that I now have in the site. I’m happy with the new plugin.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
