Hi there, I have a client who I’ve been helping to rearrange her website. This involved moving some pages and creating a dropdown menu. Since we have done this, there has been a loading issue on the site – primarily with the drop down ‘paintings’ menu. Sometimes the page loads when you first click on it and sometimes it doesn’t load at all. We have tried using different browsers and devices but cannot get consistent results.

I have since installed ‘WP Super Cache’ which specified (when using the test function) that there was a time stamp issue with the loading page. This is beyond my knowledge so I simply tried a different plugin to see if the difficulties continued. I installed W3 Total Cache, cleared the existing cache with that, but did not see any changes to the load time.

I have also installed ‘Simple SSL’ certificate and ‘Smush’ which is now optimizing the images which I thought would help with the load time but since I’ve done this some images are loading quickly and some are not?!

It would be great to get an idea of what I’ve done wrong or if there’s something I’m missing? All we did at first was change the menu navigation so I’m baffled if that created a loading issue.

I am using Firefox and Brave on PC, she is using Chrome on PC and we both used safari/chrome on iphone/ipad. It seems to be worse on tablet and phone but I still can’t get a consistent load on a computer browser.

  • Hi,

That’s odd. I’ve had a look at your website and the pages under the Paintings drop down are taking longer to load overall. This could be due to the size of the pages themselves, or the general complexity of them compared to the other pages. Do the pages load as expected (load time wise, not content wise) if you temporarily disable your gallery plugin? If so, that suggests a performance issue related to your plugin.

Sometimes the page loads when you first click on it and sometimes it doesn’t load at all

Can you please clarify what happens if the page doesn’t load? Do you see a blank page, or receive an error message? If you receive an error message, please reply with a copy of the message.

I have also installed ‘Simple SSL’ certificate and ‘Smush’ which is now optimizing the images which I thought would help with the load time but since I’ve done this some images are loading quickly and some are not?!

Simple SSL won’t help with load time, but it will help with making your website use your SSL.

How much Smush helps with the image really depends on the image. Some need more optimization than others.

I recommend checking if the Gallery plugin you’re using supports lazy loading. If it does, please enable it and then clear your page cache. Does that help?

    Kind regards,
    Alex

    Hi @alexgso

Thanks for your reply. I have disabled and deleted Smush as it seemed to be creating an issue with loading some of the images on the page. Instead of using other plugins to over complicate the issue, I have enabled optimising and lazy load options in Jetpack to try to enhance the speed of the site.

The loading problems either appear as blank white spaces where the images should appear (when you hover on the blank space it appears as though something is there) and sometimes it has been infinite loading with no result. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the amount of images on the page as the page ‘Twist’ will load for a few seconds before completing the page (and this is the page with the most images). There is no longer an issue with this page on my end.

Since completing the above I am now just getting issues with the https://suemcqueen.com/inhabitance/ page. There is a plugin called ‘Slider by Nivo’ on that page only which I have disabled. This has corrected the load problems as I can see in firefox but I am still having problems seeing the correct Inhabitance page on Brave and iPhone even after changing the slug, clearing cache etc?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi odidolypop,

The loading problems you mentioned suggest the image isn’t being loaded correctly. Does the image load correctly if temporarily disable the Jetpack Lazy Loading? If so, that points to a compatibility issue between Jetpack and another performance plugin.

Regarding the slider differences, unfortunately, I’m not familiar with that slider so I’m not too sure why that may be happening. I recommend checking with the developers for advice.

    Kind regards,
    Alex
