• I wonder why from time to time all the “pages” suddenly become inaccessible, and when you click on the respective page menus all you get is the dreaded “error 404”.

This same thing happened to one of my websites
    https://surau-an-nur.my/
about a month ago. After frantically troubleshooting for hours and reading many posts by other people who had experienced the same problem I finally discovered that the solution is so very simple. Just login to your admin dashboard, go to settings then permalinks, don’t even make any changes, just click on “Save Changes” and that’s all. Problem solved.

Well the same thing happened again just now to the same website. And I did the same thing to the permalinks settings page, and problem solved, again.

    See my screenshots of :

    error 404 page

    After the permalinks settings manoeuvre

The same page seconds later loading just fine.

The thing that bothers me is why does this happen? I did not make any changes to the website settings yet for some reason, I’m not sure whether it has to do with the Mesocolumn theme or the core WordPress CMS, the permalinks settings seem to be creating some trouble.

What can be done as a permnanent solution to this problem ? Anybody?

  • Hi Nashamiki

This usually happens if the .htaccess file is changed.

There may be a plugin or something in your theme changing your .htaccess file. I’d recommend deactivating some plugins and try and default theme and see if the issue still occurs.

It could also be something going on with the server (check with your host) or signs of a possible hack or malware (run a security scan on your site using something like Sucuri).

If you’d like to learn more about .htaccess and permalinks, check this out: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Permalinks#Where.27s_my_.htaccess_file.3F
