Page preview and update intermittently not working.

    I’m trying to write a page and as I get about a third of the way in, Preview and Update stop working. I hit either button and the browser will say “cannot display page” or “empty response” or something of that sort.

    I don’t think it’s my HTML because when I delete what was written right before WordPress stops updating, the page STILL doesn’t update. This will be content that was previewing and updating just fine BEFORE the point where WordPress decides to stop.

    If I wait a little while and update/preview again, the problem disappears. But not for very dense pages– these will just cause WordPress to stop previewing/updating not only that page, but any other page I try to edit on the site. And in fact sometimes prevents me from accessing the dashboard at all– and logs me out.

    It seems related to the number of times I hit preview or update– like too many requests in a given amount of time. But I also think it’s related to dense code as the problem seems to happen less on relatively simpler/shorter pages. Any hints on how to fix this? Clearing my browser cache doesn’t fix it.

    Have you tried:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    Thanks. The problem doesn’t seem to happen when I switch to the default theme, so I’m inclined to believe the problem is with my theme. Not the answer I was looking for because my whole site is written with this theme’s functions & shortcodes. I can’t just switch to Twenty Sixteen and not rewrite the entire website. ??

    Let’s hope the folks who wrote the theme Salient have an answer for this.
