Hi I’ve copied the history of what has been said so far, and why I am now asking here:

    2 hours, 35 minutes ago
For some reason the front page of my website has become ‘blocked’. Result is that anyone landing on it gets the members’ registration page instead of the usual local infor etc.
When I go to the admin for this page, the page regstriction box is set to ‘blocked’. It allows me to check the unblocked box and lets me ‘ok’ it. But then when I update the page, it reverts immediately to ‘blocked’.

Please help. (Just a volunteer for this website, I am not ‘techie’ at all, not into coding etc.)

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

Oh thank you, that sounds very helpful. I will install Healthcheck and see what comes up.

Before I opened the Troubleshooting tab, I noticed this:

The AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED constant is defined and enabled.

How would I sort this one out? (I might as well do the whole thing if I can!)

I have been through the troubleshooting process and re-enbaled all plugins one by one. All ok. But it occured to me that viewing the site whilst logged in as an administrator the front page was automatically showing – ie no need to log in again.

Logging in on another pc only allowed me to see the site with the original problem.

Since completing the troubleshooting, and opening the website without logging in, I am directed to the registration page again.

I would be grateful for any other thoughts you may have.

That’s probably set by a define in your wp-config.php file. Check that file first. Note that if you find it there *and you did not add it*, you might ask your host if they added it and, if so, why.

Erm, thank you for that – I have opened the wp-config.php file (on the cloud hosting site) and found it empty! Should it be?

Nope. that’s (1) bad and (2) probably impossible. Is this the file in the root of your wordpress installation?

I really don’t know. On the web hosting platform I went to a folder called file manager and found a document called wp-confif.php I opened that and it was blank. Perhaps I wasn’t in the right place? (I am a novice – but you probably guessed that if you didn’t read it earlier!)

It should be in the same directory as wp-login.php, probably public_html.

In any case the page restriction is from the plugin WP Members.

I recommend asking at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wp-members#new-post so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

I would be grateful for any help you can offer!

    Hi

Simply put, the Page Restriction facility is faulty on just one page – the front page. I am able to turn blocking on and off on other pages, but not the front page.
I don’t know why or when this page became blocked – I have used the Health-check plugin and nothing untoward shows up when each plugin is renistalled separately.
    Clearly something is wrong.
I would be grateful for any help available.
    Thanks

For future reference, if you’re going to refer to another thread just post a link to it. Copying the entire thread into a post just makes it unreadable.

Do you know if this particular site was upgraded from an older version of WP-Members? Specifically, something earlier than 2.9.8. The reason for that question is that was the point at which there was a change in how the page blocking was handled. An upgrade directly to the current version from 2.9 could be the issue.

It’s possible. We’ve been using wp-members since 2016 and have had no problems til now. The upgrades have been done as and when they appear, but while ago we had to roll back the site which then necessitated redoing all the plugin updates.

Any suggestions as to how we get past this.

(Sorry about posting the whole thread!)

I’d say the first thing to look at is if you have any of the plugin’s older post meta tags. The behavior you described sounds like that’s the issue. If you have been keeping things up-to-date that shouldn’t be the issue, but that is the first thing to eliminate as a possibility.

For whatever page your homepage is, check the custom post meta fields. If custom fields are not displayed in your page editor, go to the upper right and pull down the screen options menu to enable Custom Fields for view. If you have custom fields with the name “block” or “unblock,” delete them. Those are legacy tags that are no longer used and may interfere with the newer tag _wpmem_block (which you will not see in the page editor).

    (@bannec)

I have checked the custom fields, there is only one but it contains neither ‘block’ or ‘unblock’.

What else might I try? (I do appreciate your help!)

The plugin remains faulty, does anyone have any further suggestions?

I have managed to solve this issue but don’t know why what I did worked.

Instead of trying to unblock the home page from within the page settings itself, I used the main list of Pages and unblocked the home page from there.

For some reason this held, unlike from within the actual page admin.

Can anyone explain why this worked?

    Thanks
