    Hi,

    I’m using wordpress 3.5.1 and wordpress-seo 1.3.4.4

On Google webmaster tool I have this message :
Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.
This is about page-sitemap.xml I checked the url and I got an error 404 Page not found.
For now, I disabled the page-sitemap.xml

    I checked others : post-sitemap.xml attachment-sitemap.xml post_tag-sitemap.xml category-sitemap.xml they were all fine.

    Thanks.

  • Be sure to check the permissions and ownership of the plugin directory, depending on the credentials used to upload via ftp sometimes they dont get the right permissions and ownership. After you have verified they are the same as other working plugins, then try the method described by bluejay:
    To correct the issue…

    1. Go to WordPress Dashboard >> SEO >> XML Sitemap

    2. Uncheck the “Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality” box

    3. Click “Save Settings”

    4. Check the “Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality” box gain

    5. Click “Save Settings”

    6. Click the “You can find your XML Sitemap here:” button. Hopefully, your sitemap will appear in a new tab without the 404 page not found error

Seems like you have to reset the XML Sitemap. Hope this helps.

This remedy worked for me, as well.

ok, same issue here but in a larger scale.

I have a large amount of WP E-Commerce products that are in the sitemaps. When the posts per sitemap was defaulted at 1000, it generated 5 sitemaps named wpsc-product-sitemap1.xml, wpsc-product-sitemap2.xml etc. up to wpsc-product-sitemap5.xml.

All the sitemaps work except wpsc-product-sitemap5.xml which generates a 404 error. I changed the posts per sitemap to 500 and now I have 9 sitemaps under the same naming convention. The thing is, now wpsc-product-sitemap9.xml generates a 404 error.

I tried to restart the plugin, I turned off sitemaps and turned it back on, and none of this works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Thanks for the reply BVRamanarao. I fixed it.

The reason for the 404 sitemap, was that the WP SEO query to build the sitemap not only retrieves products that are in “publish” status, but also “inherit”. Apparently there are some incorrect products in the DB that are set as inherit and causing false query returns, thus generating the extra sitemap. I removed the “inherit” from the query and all works fine now.

    Thanks again!

Thanks pbsbluejay, Your quick reset method worked for my site. ProFoundArtist.com. I had the 404 not found page with no site map.

    Thank you much!
