Page titles being duplicated

I am just starting out with WordPress and chose the Graphene theme. I have begun with pages having the following titles:
Home, About, Contact. These titles appear, as I would expect, as menu tabs. However I have found that the same titles also appear at the top of the content of their respective pages. Being used to Joomla I cannot understand why this duplication occurs. Is there any way of preventing it?

Basically I don’t want my home page, for example, to have a menu tab and then the word “home” repeated above the content.

I can submit a screen shot of the situation if you need clarification if you can point me to where I could do an upload.
