Over the past two-plus weeks, my page views have been in a free-fall. Bounce rate has gone from 30% to 91%. It’s not one of those usual peaks/lulls that my site regularly encounters – this just goes down and down and down. Was thinking it might have been related to an update from MonsterInsights, as both have been on my site for something like two years now (but never with a problem). Have deleted that plugin, but I’m wondering if tracking code is still affected? Just guessing, anyway, that it was a matter of two sets of tracking codes canceling something out. I prefer to keep using GADW, but I need to know why the page views are in a free fall. Can you help me figure out how to solve this? (PS: I’m very computer illiterate; I keep a very simple blog with a dozen basic plugins and don’t ever attempt anything beyond the basics. So I hope you can offer help in layman’s language! Thanks in advance for your help! It’s an awful feeling to watch page views drop from 600 for months, to under 200 (all within the past two weeks). • Hi,

Here’s what’s happening when you have two tracking codes inserted at the same time in your pages:

    – your pageviews are inflated at a grade of almost doubling (most of the page views are counted twice)
    – your bounce rate is very low (for obvious reasons, since almost all pageviews are tracked twice)

If a plugin also offers an option to count events as pageviews (mine doesn’t and will probably never will, for same reasons) the number of pageviews can get even higher.

Most probably, at some point, the tracking code from the other plugin stopped working and the reality kicked in. Disabling it didn’t make any difference since it wasn’t working.

I’ve looked over your tracking code and works as expected, if you feel like doing your own checks here’s a useful resource.

From my point of view, your stats are now reflecting the “real” number of pageviews and the “real” bouncerate, as real as statistical analysis can be, anyway.

Thank you, this is a great help! Not happy to hear I duped myself into believing the high page views meant 2x the readers, but the truth (while painful) is always best to know. Thanks, Alin – and I like the GADW plugin!
