page.php and index.php

hey everyone.

I have a template in wordpress and I have a question that I couldnt find it’s answer anywhere.

I want to make 2 seperate pages for my web site.
1 is for the main page, Index.php
and 2nd for the rest of the pages, page.php.

I made both of the pages, gave each the wordpress loop and the rest of the html code for each.

but when I add the page.php its ignoring the index.php.

how can i solve this problem ?
