I got on WordPress and updated a page for our annual event. Right before I published the page, I looked at the text tab for some reason. I noticed that ads for viagra were in the code. I then started to check the other pages and posts and they were also infected with the same code. Luckily I caught it before I posted the page. I had my hosting company delete my whole site and I recreated it from scratch.

My question is, would WordFence prevent hackers, bots, or whatever modified my pages and post? I’m looking for something, the hosting company says they have a service but it would cost my club $540 for a three-year subscription to it. We’re a small club and we cant afford that. They said we need something that will scan the database my WordPress site uses. Will Wordfence scan the database?

Hi @chappster, thanks for your message.

Wordfence will look after your WordPress installation using its extensive database of vulnerabilities, IPs and signatures to detect exploitable plugins, known current “bad” IPs/hostnames, and malicious files. Rules updates are released weekly for the free version of Wordfence to assist with this.

There are still proactive steps that site administrators should take to prevent problems such as the one you’ve seen with code insertion including enforcing strong passwords, protecting administrative accounts with 2FA/reCAPTCHA and ensuring database/cPanel/hosting accounts are well secured.

You can read more about what Wordfence protects you against and how to use it in our free learning center: https://www.wordfence.com/learn/

    Thanks,

    Peter.
