Pages appear in editor, not on the site

  • The root site in our WordPress network has 271 pages. The network has 8 sites and around 1,500 pages total. We have a dozen administrators and perhaps 20 editors.

    While preparing for a network launch last night, I was looking through the pages list and received this message in the yellow update bar at the top: “Thank you for Updating! Please visit the Update Network page to update all your sites.”

    There is no way we could have updated, because the site has been running the latest WP version all along, and obviously, there was no new version released last night.

    After seeing this message, I immediately discovered none of my pages were displaying on the front of the root site. As far as I can tell, all pages still contain the complete and correct data within the editor – nothing has changed with the data – but the pages will not display on the site.

    We have a lot of experience with WordPress and have worked through all the logical troubleshooting steps, but have been unable to find a potential cause. Any ideas?

    Refresh your permalinks on the site to see if that fixes it.

    Are you sure you were running 3.2.1? The only logical answer is … you weren’t and it was upgraded…

    How many other admins do you have on your site?

    No…we absolutely were running 3.2.1. I conduct a test update as soon as every new version is released, then update the entire network after making sure there are no plugin or theme problems. Same procedure when 3.2.1 was released.

    What do you mean by “refresh” my permalinks?

    We have about a dozen administrators and two super-admins.

    Set the permalinks (Options / Permalinks)to default, save, then set them back to the setting you’re using and save again.

    There is no way we could have updated, because the site has been running the latest WP version all along, and obviously, there was no new version released last night.

    WordPress will cheerfully let you re-install the existing current version:

    You have the latest version of WordPress.

    You have the latest version of WordPress. You do not need to update. However, if you want to re-install version 3.2.1, you can do so automatically or download the package and re-install manually:

    Is it possible someone’s done that, and that doing so generates a “thank you for updating” message?

    I hadn’t even thought of the re-install option, but yes, it is possible someone did this.

    I will try the permalink refresh too.
