Re: Pages, Menus vs. Posts design and functionality

Okay, I have an elementary understanding of the difference between pages and posts, and as many comments have pointed out, a blog is not a website. However, the more basic question is: what are the implications of having a blog look and feel more like a website? Disclaimer (in case you haven’t already figured it out) this is my first blog – please don’t run away, I have a point.

By ‘website’ I don’t mean that I want it to behave like a website, but let’s say, for arguments sake, I tell someone to check out my blog site, I want them to be able to see where to go to look for what, and not have to scroll indefinitely, or click through my latest posts. FYI: At this point my blog has almost nothing (most posts are in draft format) until I figure out how I want the blog to look.

Right now, I’m trying to (more once I have experience),

    1. Have several pages and link posts
    2. Have the sidebar only show on Home/About page or, have page/topic-relevant “Recent Posts’ only show on corresponding page’s sidebar.
    3. Have menus and sub-menus
    4. Don’t laugh: figure out how to download and install a directory
    5. Find the best Widgets to help support functionality

    Questions:
    1) If (as many have pointed out) posting articles by category on different pages is a non sequitor because of how tags work, then why do so many blogs have several pages? What search implications do multiple pages have?
    2) Or, am I confusing PAGES with MENUES? If so, wouldn’t I want multiple pages if I’m using menus?
    3) Does a different Theme (still pretty basic) other than 2010 come to mind that might address my questions (and necessitate fewer plugins)?

Note: I want pages to represent general topics – almost like consolidating blogs

    Thoughts?
