I’m using permalinks on my site… – .htaccess is properly writable and writing posts works. However, I am unable to add pages (I just get 404 errors for the links).

    Why is this happening?

  • Well, maybe it isn’t “properly writable” – usually that’s the reason why Pages get a 404 error.

    It is.

Is the problem that you can’t post pages, or that you can’t view the posted pages through the permalinks? Do the pages view ok using the page id?

Also what’s the url so we can check it out?

After you create the Page you may need to do Admin, Options, Permalinks and Update Your Permalink structure. See these articles for more info:

If that does or doesn’t work for you please come back and let us know. Also, as oriecat suggested, it’s always good to post a link so the problem can be viewed first hand.

Okay, apparently what happened is that upon doing the upgrade from 1.2.x to 1.5.x, it didn’t modify my .htaccess file automatically. I had to hit “upgrade structure” to get it to work.

It works now. Thanks for all who helped.

I am having the same problem but my situation is still not resolved. I tried taking down the permalink structure and putting it back up but that didnt work. For some reason all the posts take to the permalink structure fine, as do my old pages which were added before I started using permalinks, but my new pages won’t take to it… they do however work with page id #s

check the contact and special features pages…

    thanks for any help.

The .htaccess file has to be writable in the moment when you save your Pages.
Q: Did you alter the slug for Pages before saving them or after?

so should i delete those new pages, undo the permalinks and .htaccess file, create the pages again then redo the permalink structure?

… don’t remeber about the slugs but lemme try this first. im thinking it should work. thanks.

You don’t have to delete the Pages. But when you create a new permalinks structure do you click the Update button?

    yes…

then i upload the .htaccess file

still won’t work with the new pages

Argh… If there is no .htaccess file, what would “remember” your changed options???
    1. Have a writable (empty) .htaccess file uploaded.
    2. Go to options > permalinks
    3. Set the permalinks structure you want
    4. Click update
    5. You can change the chmod for the htaccess file to not leave it writable for the whole word… just don’t forget
    6. to make it writable again before saving/creating a New Page.

thank you… must say, you are very good at this.
