Pagespeed settings went down not up
-
Hi,
I just purchased the plugin yesterday and applied the API key. It doesn’t seem to work. I had pagespeed mobile at 69/100 and desktop at 84/100 and since I applied the power up it has gone down to 39 and 71 respectively.I have sure I am missing a few steps. Would you be so kind as to assist me in setting it up correctly?
Thanks,
The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hey skpolume ??
First off; I’m seeing 70 mobile/ 84 desktop actually;
Now with regards to “render blocking CSS/JS”, try (and test to make sure nothing breaks) the following one at a time:
* remove “js/jquery/jquery.js” from the list of AO JS optimization exclusions (do test your site thoroughly, some themes/ plugins need jQuery early, in which case it has to be left excluded)
* remove “dashicons.min.css” from the list of AO CSS optimization exclusions
* remove “wp-content/cache” from the list of AO CSS optimization exclusions (keep an eye on your Autoptimize cache size after that)For Google Fonts you could benefit from a new option (“aggregate and preload Google Fonts”) in AO 2.4, so optionally try the beta out?
Ping me here with your feedback on the above, once that dust has settled I’ll review your critical CSS to see if/ how we can improve on that if needed.
Enjoy your Friday,
frankHi, mine went down also… are these general recommendations? should I give them a go as well?
I tried removing the js/jquery/jquery.js …but my images would not load…

morning crystalmaree;
you are at 71/74 (no idea where you were before). based on GPSI’s recommendations, I would advise you to (in order of importance in the context of this plugin);* check if you have active rules in AO CCSS (autoptimize critical css) already. if not, check the job queue, if all are in “n” state you might have an issue with WordPress cron (which AO CCSS requires) not running (correctly). i can provide more info if needed (this will go in the FAQ soon).
* you have a widget (woo stamped io) which has both CSS & JS that are render-blocking, if you want your page to render asap, you should consider ditching that widget (or changing it for another one or convince the developer of another solution)
* you have images that can be optimized significantly better, consider installing an image optimization plugin (e.g. shortpixel, cfr. “optimize more” tab in Autoptimize)
* the kayako (chat) JS is not render-blocking, but there are some GPSI warning about those as well.hope this helps,
frankWow, thanks for your speedy reply Frank!
Yes, it looks like I have an issue with the cron.
All rules are in “N”
and I have this message: WordPress cron (for task scheduling) seems to be disabled. Have a look at the info in the Job Queue instructions if all jobs remain in “N” status and no rules are created.I have a cron plugin that is mediating info for my WooCurve upsell. Could that be part of it?
I have cloudflare and am using the image optimisation through that… should I also use the short pixel on top of that? Or is there a better setting in cloudflare I should be using?
Thanks in advance!
CrystalAlso, I found this for the stamped.io plugin: https://help.stamped.io/article/18-setup-widget-2-0
Is the top script helpful for this?
Not sure what I’ve done wrong… but the images are not rendering now on the website ??

Noon Crystal;
* Regarding optimizing images; given the fact that GPSI claims more optimization is possible, I would certainly install Shortpixel (or an alternative).
* Regarding images not rendering; seems to work now?
* Regarding stamped.io; the instructions are for shopify, not woocommerce. maybe log a ticket in stamped.io’s support system asking for a solution (to have their CSS & JS not being render blocking)?Most importantly regarding AO CCSS:
* no idea what that cron plugin does/ how it works (do you have links to a page with a description/ documentation?), so can’t comment on that really.
* to see what the cron-issue is, you could install the “wp crontrol”-plugin and then under Tools -> Cron Events look for “ao_ccss_queue” and check the “next run” time/ date. If the “ao_ccss_queue” job is not there, you’ll have to de- and re-activate the “autoptimize critical css” plugin to have it re-register the queue-processing task. If the “ao_ccss_queue” job is there, but has a “next run” date in the past, there is an issue with your site/ hosters WordPress cron and you will have to contact your hoster. Some hosters’ info on the topic: WP Engine, BlueHost, HostGator and SiteGround.
* What you can do in the mean time (while we try to sort out the cron-issue) is create manual “conditional tag”-based rules extract critical CSS directly on https://criticalcss.com for 4-5 type pages and paste it in the rules as: one for is_front_page for your homepage, one for is_page for normal pages, one for is_single for blogposts and one for is_archive for blogpost overview.frank
Thanks Frank.
I’m not able to use the Autoptimize beta for some reason.
When I do, the images don’t want to load? Or maybe it’s just that they load slowly?I do have the wp control plugin.
It looks like the interval is every 10 min (?)
…I’m not sure what I need to do for this instruction or for the next one…I’ve taken screenshots of what I’m looking at.
Hey Crystal;
Based on the fact that you have 2 active rules in the plugin and 2 API-results on the criticalcss.com screenshot, it looks like there is no (major) cron-issue after all. Do you already see more rules in the mean time?Regarding AO beta; let’s create a different topic, in the AO 2.4 announcement topic maybe instead of mixing things up here, would that be OK for you?
frank
how are things going Crystal, do you have more rules now?
Hi Frank, thanks for following up… Yes, think so (?)
I’m not entirely sure what I need to do now.
This is what I’m looking at…well;
-> there seems to be no cron-issue, so that’s good
-> your GPSI is now 80/86, so you’re improving, that’s good as wellwhat you can still do;
-> you have 2 render-blocking JS-files; e-mail decode (cloudflare) and jquery.js (wordpress). the first one is an option in cloudflare I guess, consider disabling that. for jquery.js try removing that from AO’s default JS optimizations and test if your site still works (re-add it if not)
-> you have 3 non-AO render-blocking CSS-files; “themes/flatsome/assets/css/fl-icons.css” and 2 Google Fonts-files. for the flatsome-one; did you exclude that in AO’s config? for Google Fonts; have a look at AO settings -> extra and experiment with the Google Fonts options there.and lastly regarding critical CSS;
-> most rules are “R” (for review) which indicates not all is OK yet
-> your CSS is still render-blocking, confirming there still is “stuff” to be improvedso I’ll have a look at those (and also asked Jonas of ccss.com to do so), we’ll keep you posted!
Thanks Frank!
– I’ll reach out to cloudflare re email decode script
– I tried removing the default JS optimisations, but when I do this the images do not load.– With the google fonts, I’ve selected “remove” saved and purged the cache, purged my cloudflare cache… but still it’s popping up under optimise, I’m not sure what else to do there
– also for browser caching, I followed the instructions and put the extra info in my .htaccess file, but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference to those resources that are listed..?
– I’m now using shortpixel, so I’m curious why it’s still showing up images that need to be optimised..?
Thanks for all your help with this, I’ll look forward to hearing back from you on the critical CSS as well ??
Crystalre. removing jquery; is image-lazy loading part of your theme? maybe check with the theme developer?
re. google fonts; I see one (Lato) in the HTML, the other one (Sans Pro) I don’t even see. you can try this code snippet to remove the Lato-loading JS;
add_filter('autoptimize_filter_js_removables','remove_lato_js'); function remove_lato_js($in) { return $in."https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/webfont/1/webfont.js"; }
re. browser caching; all resources mentioned now are out of your reach (hosted elsewhere), so -except for removing those 3rd party resources- there’s nothing you can do.
re. images; maybe some shortpixel settings would allow you to improve even more, contact shortpixel support if needed?
Thank you.
I’m now having problems on this page: https://ecologyskincare.com/trial/
The images are not loading…?
Can you please help me trouble shoot what’s going on here?Also, I’m curious as to why in the first 1-2sec that a page is loading, you can see words and enlarged images..? Is there a way to stop this?
Thanks in advance!
CrystalHey Crystal ??
-> images are loading for me, but I do see a JS error on that page which is caused by inline JS calling on jQuery before jQuery itself is loaded (a no-no);
-> words & enlarged images on some pages (e.g. homepage) is due to some in the CCSS, still have to dive in that I’m afraid (sorry for the delay).
