• Hi, I’ve got an issue with pagination on category page. Since I changed my theme for Twenty Twenty Three, the page 2 has been replying in 404. However, it replied in 200 before – and there is still enough posts to split it in 2 pages.

How can I solve it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey @dchchloe – that definitely seems a little frustrating. It’s tricky to tell why that is happening – but I’ve got one thing you can try out.

Could you please give that a try and let me know how it goes?

Hi, thank you for your response! Unfortunately, it did not change anything, the page still responds in 404 (I also cleared cache and checked in incognito mode).

Hmmm – thanks for trying that @dchchloe. With that ruled out

This may be a plugin conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, if the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.

There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

Noted a similar issue on a site that has been around 9 years and which is being migrated to Twenty Twenty-Four currently. It had started already on the previous GeneratePress (“hybrid block theme”) based theme during simultaneous multisite migration but it went unnoticed there, so seems to predate FSE on my case.

Site permalink settings are following:

For some reason, the category archive pages have ended up having two different paths, of which only the other one has working pagination links while they seem identical otherwise.

Dynamic category archive links on article pages lead to the working path so things are mostly working, but there are some links in content that lead to this faulty path that should not exist in the first place AFAIK.

Maybe @dchchloe it could help to try changing category link structure to have /category/ before the <category_name>? Guessing it’s setting can contribute pagination issues like this.

Thanks for the extra info here folks – it would definitely be helpful to try testing out returning the permalinks to include /category/ and see if that makes a difference. (If nothing else it would help us narrow down the problem).
