• Hi Tom.

I’m a very happy user of GeneratePress Premium. I want to emulate with WP Show Posts the feature in your GP Blog add-on, where you can set a full width featured post for the first post, and then have the remaining posts in 2 cols underneath.

In WP Show Posts, I’ve created a ‘featured’ list and set it to show 1 post. I’ve then created a ‘standard’ 2 column list underneath, set to ‘offset=1’, to stop the featured post displaying in this standard list. I’ve then placed the shortcodes for each on a standard page. There isn’t a ‘posts’ page set in Settings > Reading.

All good so far… except the pagination doesn’t work properly.

    1. Each ‘page’ of the pagination displays the latest/featured post at the top (which I’d only want to show on page 1), and also…

    2. If I set the ‘standard’ list to show 2 posts at a time, the same 2 posts are on every ‘page’ of the pagination. These are basically the latest 2 posts, except for the featured one which they’re being offset=1 by. While the pagination links are being created, I basically get the same posts on all pagination pages.

Any idea what might be happening? I presume it’s getting confused because of there being 2 lists with the offset in place?

I notice WP Show Posts Pro has a ‘featured post’ feature. Will that solve this issue instead? Happy to pay!

    Thanks for your help. ??

    Hi there,

Hmm, that’s definitely an issue – I’ll have to dig a little deeper to see if there’s a solution. Using the two post lists might just not work with paginated lists.

Can I assume that you’re wanting the featured post to have a different image size/alignment than the rest of the posts? Any other differences you’re looking for?

    Let me know ??

    Thanks Tom.

Actually, I’m happy with image alignment and size being the same for both the single col featured post and the 2 col posts. I currently have the image size for the 2 col posts set the same as the featured. They both need to fill their respective available column widths.

I guess, ideally, I should make the 2 col post images maximum width whatever the mobile breakpoint is, as that’s the largest they’ll ever need to be (when they drop down to a single column each). Which would actually make them smaller than the featured column image. But it’s not a big issue really.

Does the ‘featured post’ feature in the pro version solve the pagination issue (because presumably it’s just 1 list, not 2)?

    Thanks again!

In that case then yes, the featured post feature would definitely fix that issue.

You should also get the same result using GeneratePress and the blog add-on.

Excellent Tom. Great to know I can achieve this layout either with GP (which I’ve done, no problem) for standard posts, and with WP Show Posts Pro for custom post types. ??

    Again, many thanks indeed.

Sorry, if I may quickly ask while I’m here…

Being able to create custom/fake archive pages for custom post types with WP Show Posts is superb. But if I have custom taxonomies, the taxonomy archive pages default to GP’s archive page template. I’d love to be able to have the same archive page layout for taxonomies as the custom/fake archive page I created with WP Show Posts. Usually the blog archive layout isn’t suitable.

It’s a long shot, and I’m 99.9% sure not possible, but… is there a way of achieving this?

Just occasionally I miss fairly simple tricks like this, thought I’d ask. ??

    Thanks again.

I’m afraid it’s not possible to overwrite those template pages. The best you could do is set up 301 redirects from those pages to a custom page you create with a new post like.

However, it is possible to use the same column layout using the Blog add-on on different custom post types. Feel free to start a new topic in the premium forum and I’ll help out ??
