I used the dashboard to download and install the theme (1.1.43) but when I went to test it with the live preview I got this message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_FUNCTION in …public_html/wp/wp-content/themes/hestia/functions.php on line 39

My server uses PHP version 5.2.17

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks in advance!

After the system update the problem was solved

    jmchaves,

I was having this same error with the Hestia theme and others. I downloaded these last night. What system update are you referring to? I was running PHP 5.2.17, but I updated it to the most recent version: 7.1.3. I have not updates needed in the WordPress updates or theme updates.

    Hey there,

Is it still not working on your site, heathj85? Having an updated PHP version should fix it, also make sure that you didn’t upload the theme using FTP. ??

    Hardeep,

Updating the PHP to 7.1.3 did not seem to fix the issue. I was not downloading the theme through FTP nor was I installing it on my wordpress website using FTP. I tried multiple themes and I was having the same issue. I wound up moving on to the Allegiant theme. Same problems. Then, I just returned to my dashboard and I was able to move forward and finish setting things up … until I tried to import the dummy XML data. I started bumping into memory upload issues despite the fact that HostGator setup my php.ini and .htaccess file with the maximum allotments. I finally called HostGator and walked one of their technical support reps through my issue. He uploaded the XML file and it worked for him.
