I created a mySQL database, added 3 tables and populated them.

I unzipped wordpress version 3.4, uploaded the files into a wp folder in my http root folder.

Got a parse error on the first try, so I copied the sample config php file and edited the database information (using the server’s ip address) then uploaded the wp-config.php to the wp folder but still got the parse error below.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/content/d/a/s/dasecho/html/wp/wp-includes/option.php on line 225

    Has anyone seen this before?

  • annymueller, do you know your PHP version? Maybe if we compare what’s working we may be able to isolate where the issue is: PHP or WP. esmi’s sites updated well with PHP 5.3.3 and 5.3.13.

I simply assumed that my GoDaddy server was on PHP 5 or higher since it’s been out for so long and also since mySQL was version 5.0. Duh! I’ll have to have my site moved to a different server with at least PHP 5.3.3. Thanks, mystery solved. Sorry for all the trouble.

Seondary issue: My home machine is running PHP 5 and mySQL 5 and am able to run the install.php but when trying to connect to localhost (apache server) it does not find my database. It was very late and I tried a few times but I did not have access to internet help so I gave up until I resolve my internet issues. If anyone has a quick idea here, I would appreciate it, otherwise not a biggie. I will repost should I not find a solution by searching the forum.

    Well!

I upgraded my PHP on Godaddy to 5.3 and had a few minutes to kill so what the hey, I decided to browse to the install.php page. It ran first shot, found the database, installed WordPress and it really only took 5 minutes.

Many thanks to all of you. It looks good so far. I have a challenge ahead to learn the WP functionality as I’m at the beginning of the learning curve. I will be marking this topic as resolved.

    Till we meet again.

Glad that appears to have solved your problem, annymueller. If we can get a few more people to have the same experience, the PHP version may be a contributor to the problems.

Just wanted to add a quick note to those on GoDaddy servers. In the hosting section there is a quick way to change the php version for each hosting package. The highest php version one can choose is 5.3 which is more than enough for WordPress 3.4.

EDITED: Glad that appears to have solved your problem, annymueller. If we can get a few more people WHO have the same experience, the PHP version may be a contributor to the problems.
